Playa Norte — the main event

Holbox’s main beach runs east-west along the north coast of the island, in front of town and the boutique hotels. Wide white sand, shallow warm water, beach clubs with loungers, small vendors selling ceviche and cold beer.

  • Best for: full beach days, sunset, dining with feet-in-sand.
  • Water: Turquoise, knee to chest deep for a long way out. Sandy bottom.
  • Access: Free — public beach with no gates. Beach clubs charge for loungers via minimum spend.
  • Facilities: Restrooms + showers at beach clubs. No lifeguards.
  • Sunset: Prime viewing spot. Face west from the beach.

Beach club tip

Order lunch (not just drinks) between 12 and 2 PM at any beach club and they’ll typically comp your afternoon lounger for free.

Punta Mosquito — the sandbar walk

The eastern tip of Holbox. A shallow sandbar extends about 1.5 km into the lagoon, walkable at low tide with turquoise water knee-deep the whole way. Flamingo flocks occasionally rest along the sandbar in mornings.

  • Best for: Instagram photos, flamingo sightings, morning walks.
  • Water: Ankle to knee deep for a very long way out. Not a swim beach.
  • Access: Golf cart or bike east from town along Playa Norte, ~15 min. Then walk 1 km east on the sand.
  • Timing: Check the tide. Only fully walkable 3-4 hours around low tide.
  • Best time of day: Early morning (6-8 AM). Flamingos rest at the sandbar overnight and leave by mid-morning.

Punta Cocos — the biolum beach

The southwest tip of Holbox, past the Zona Hotelera. Less developed than Playa Norte, more pristine, better for sunset and — after dark, during summer — the epicenter of Holbox’s bioluminescent water.

  • Best for: Sunset, bioluminescence (Jun-Sep), fewer crowds, romantic evening walks.
  • Water: Slightly deeper than Playa Norte. Real swimming depth.
  • Access: Golf cart or bike south + west from town, ~20 min. Sand road, easy.
  • Facilities: Minimal. One or two small palapas.
  • Biolum: On a moonless night in Jun-Aug, walk into knee-deep water and swirl your hand. Each splash lights up electric blue. Live rating on /bioluminescence.

The sandbanks

Several sandbars around Holbox are only accessible by boat and only visible at low tide. Passion Island (Isla Pasión) is the most famous — a stop on the standard 3-Islands Tour. Others emerge and disappear seasonally.

See our 3-Islands Tour guide for the boat trip.

When each beach is best

  • Sunrise: Punta Mosquito for the flamingos, Playa Norte if you just want the light.
  • Midday swim: Playa Norte for shade + food, Punta Cocos for solitude.
  • Sunset: Playa Norte for the beach-club scene, Punta Cocos for quiet + biolum lead-in.
  • After dark: Punta Cocos in biolum season, Parque Central town for music and dinner otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Is the water at Holbox always calm?expand_more

Almost always. The Yalahau Lagoon between Holbox and the mainland is shallow (1-2 m) and protected from open-sea waves. During strong nortes (winter cold fronts), you get short 1-day chop.

Can you swim at Punta Mosquito?expand_more

Yes but the shallow sandbar water is knee to waist deep for a long walk out. Better for wading and photos than proper swimming. Punta Cocos and Playa Norte are the real swim beaches.

Is there sargassum on Holbox beaches?expand_more

Sometimes, mainly June through September. Way less than mainland Riviera Maya (Tulum, Playa) because of Holbox’s north-facing coastline. Check current status on our /now page.

Are the beach clubs free?expand_more

Playa Norte has free public sections. Beach clubs let you use loungers and umbrellas if you order food/drinks (usually a minimum consumption, MXN 300-500 per person).
