The two Holbox seasons

Holbox has a dry season (November–April) and a wet season (May–October). The dry season is what most travel guides recommend — sun, low humidity, calm sea. But the wet season is when Holbox’s two showcase phenomena happen: whale sharks and bioluminescence.

For real-time conditions: Holbox weather + 7-day forecast, tonight’s biolum rating, and whale shark season status.

Month by month

January – February · Dry high season

Sunny 27–29°C days, cool nights (~19°C). Occasional norte winds (2–3 days of stronger sea). Zero sargassum. Restaurants and hotels at their busiest — book 60+ days out. No whale sharks, no biolum. Best for: beach purists escaping northern winter.

March – April · Peak dry, Semana Santa

Warmer (~30°C), still dry. Semana Santa (Easter week) brings Mexican domestic tourists — the island doubles in population and prices spike. First week of April is fine; Easter itself is the busiest week of the year alongside Christmas. Sargassum begins showing intermittently.

May · Shoulder — whale sharks arrive

Warmer still (31–32°C highs), humidity rising, first afternoon showers. Whale shark season officially opens May 15 and early season tours run when weather cooperates. Prices dip after Easter through early June.

June – July · Whale shark peak

High humidity, ~32°C, daily brief afternoon rains. Whale shark tours run every day (weather permitting) with the highest sighting reliability of the year. Bioluminescence begins to peak at Punta Cocos. If you can tolerate the humidity, this is the wildlife window.

August · Peak wildlife, growing hurricane odds

Whale sharks still peaking, biolum still excellent. Hurricane risk begins ramping — most storms track through the Caribbean below Holbox but active watching begins. Prices soften after the first week.

September · Cheapest, riskiest

Historically Holbox’s highest hurricane-strike probability month. Also the cheapest. Whale shark season closes September 15. Sargassum is at annual peak. Small businesses close for maintenance. Only recommended if you’re very flexible and can rebook a flight.

October · Season transitions, quiet

Rain declining, hurricane risk falling by mid-month, sargassum clearing. Very few tourists — restaurants half-empty. Dead of the year for whale sharks but a lovely quiet month.

November · Sweet spot

Weather returns to dry-season pattern. No sargassum. No crowds until American Thanksgiving. Prices moderate. Our top recommendation month for first-time visitors.

December · Ramp to Christmas

Perfect weather. First half is quiet and moderately priced; last two weeks (Dec 20 – Jan 5) are the most expensive of the year and hotels fill 4+ months in advance. New Year’s on Playa Norte is a proper beach party.

Best month for what

  • Whale sharks: July — highest sighting reliability and calm mornings.
  • Bioluminescence: July–August on nights around new moon (check tonight’s rating).
  • Weather + crowds balance: Second half of November.
  • Budget: Late April to mid-May, or October (accept the rain risk).
  • Kite-surfing: January and February — reliable norte winds.
  • Romantic + quiet: Early December before Christmas, or February excluding Valentine’s week.

Hurricane season honesty

The Atlantic hurricane season is June through November, with the highest risk for the Yucatán August through October. Direct hits on Holbox are historically rare— the island sits in a semi-sheltered lagoon and takes glancing blows more often than direct landfalls. The ferry pauses during storms and hotels evacuate conservatively.

If you book in hurricane season

Buy travel insurance that covers weather-related trip changes. Look for refundable hotel rates. Track the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) and be ready to move your flight forward by a day or two if a named storm approaches.
