Whale sharks on Holbox: Off-season

Off-season. Whale shark tours don’t run. Focus on 3-Islands tours, fishing, bioluminescence, and beaches. Season reopens 2027 on 2027-05-15.

When to go

  • Regular season: May 15 – September 15
  • Peak sightings: Mid-June through mid-August
  • Best odds: July, when plankton density is at its annual maximum off Cabo Catoche
  • Off-season: October – May 14. Whale sharks migrate; no tours run.

Sightings are strongly weather-dependent. Even in peak season, a bad wind day can cancel trips — most reputable operators offer a next-day rebook, not a refund.
