What the 3-Islands Tour is

A shared half-day boat tour that visits three signature spots around Holbox and the neighboring Yalahau Lagoon system. It’s the default “first activity” recommendation from most Holbox hotels because it covers a lot without requiring you to plan anything.

The three stops

Stop 1 · Isla Pájaros (Bird Island)

A small protected islet in the Yalahau Lagoon that hosts frigatebirds, pelicans, and occasionally roseate spoonbills. The boat pulls up to an observation tower — you don’t set foot on the island itself (protected). Time on-stop: 20-30 minutes. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Stop 2 · Yalahau Lagoon & Cenote

A shallow, freshwater cenote surrounded by mangrove — the water comes from underground springs. Local legend says drinking it grants long life (pirates supposedly did). You can swim, snorkel among freshwater fish, and jump from a small wooden platform. Time on-stop: 45-60 minutes.

Stop 3 · Passion Island (Isla Pasión)

A pristine sandbar-turned-tiny-island west of Holbox. Turquoise shallows, powdered white sand, a lone rustic bar-restaurant. This is the “beach afternoon” part of the tour — swim, hammock, order a beer. Time on-stop: 60-90 minutes.

Who it’s best for

  • First-time visitors — covers a lot of the “island vibe” efficiently.
  • Families — all three stops are kid-friendly. Yalahau especially.
  • Anyone off-season for whale sharks — this is the go-to alternative activity.
  • Solo travelers — the shared format is inherently social.

Verdict

Worth it once, especially on your first trip. On a second Holbox visit, consider hiring a private lancha (MXN 2,500-4,000 for the boat, up to 6 people) and going just to Yalahau + Passion Island — skipping Isla Pájaros — for a more relaxed, less rushed experience.

Booking advice

Book the morning departure. The water is calmer, you get first pick of the Yalahau platform, and Passion Island isn’t crowded yet. Afternoon departures often mean choppier crossings and busier stops.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 3-Islands Tour worth it?expand_more

For first-time visitors — yes. It covers three signature Holbox spots in one boat, at a reasonable price, without needing to organize logistics yourself. For repeat visitors, you can usually beat it by hiring a private lancha and choosing which stops matter.

How long does the tour take?expand_more

Typically 4-5 hours. Half-day morning (8 AM – 1 PM) or afternoon (1 PM – 6 PM) departures.

Do you actually get to swim at each stop?expand_more

Yes at Yalahau (a freshwater cenote) and Passion Island (a sandbank). Isla Pájaros is watched from the boat only — the birds are protected.

Is lunch included?expand_more

Usually not on the standard price. Some operators offer an upgraded package with lunch on Passion Island for MXN 300-500 extra.

Can I do this tour in whale shark season instead of whale sharks?expand_more

Yes — it’s a completely different half-day. Many travelers do 3-islands the day before or after their whale shark trip.
