Best family hotels on Isla Holbox

Pool or beachfront, interconnecting room options, calm shallow swimming water, and a walkable, car-free town. These are the Holbox hotels we’d actually book with kids — ranked by confidence-adjusted Google rating. No all-inclusives on this island (if that’s a must-have, look at Riviera Maya); the upside is you’ll walk to a different restaurant every night.

What makes a good Holbox family hotel

Direct beach access

Playa Norte is 100m of shallow turquoise water — perfect for toddlers. Beachfront hotels skip the walk.

Pool as backup

For midday heat or when biting insects pick up at dusk. A pool-plus-beach combo is the sweet spot.

Breakfast included

Removes one planning cycle per day. Most mid-range Holbox hotels include it; confirm before booking.

Interconnecting rooms

Rare on Holbox but worth asking. Suites or two-bedroom cabanas are the alternative.

FAQ

Is Holbox a good island for families with young kids?
Excellent, actually. The entire main beach (Playa Norte) is calm, shallow, and warm — you can walk 100 metres out and still be at knee-height for an adult. The town is car-free (golf-cart taxis only), so kids can wander safely. The main downsides: biting insects at dusk during rainy season, and the ferry crossing can be rough on toddlers in high winds.
What should I look for in a family hotel on Holbox?
In rough priority: (1) direct beach access or a pool (both ideal); (2) interconnecting rooms or a suite with a bedroom door; (3) breakfast included (saves one meal planning session per day); (4) AC in all rooms; (5) a reliable front desk for crib/high-chair requests. Many Holbox hotels are small and don't have kids clubs — plan on hands-on parenting, not resort-style babysitting.
Any all-inclusive family resorts on Holbox?
No real all-inclusives. Holbox hotels are mostly 10-40 rooms, independently owned, and most charge for meals separately. If you want all-inclusive, look at the Riviera Maya instead. The upside of Holbox: you'll walk to a different restaurant every night and discover more of the local scene.
Where should we stay with kids — downtown or beach?
Beachfront is nicer but a 10-min walk from the main square. Downtown puts you steps from restaurants and golf-cart rentals but you walk 2-5 minutes to the beach. With kids under 5, beachfront is worth the premium so you can nap/change inside and still be beachside. Over 7, downtown is fine — the walk is on sand streets, no cars.
Are high chairs and cribs easy to arrange?
Smaller family hotels usually have them; always confirm by WhatsApp before you arrive, not at check-in. Larger properties have them as standard. If yours doesn't, there are two baby-equipment rental services on the island that'll deliver to your hotel.
What about kids on the ferry crossing?
25 min crossing on both operators. Modern catamarans, air-conditioned cabin option, benches. No stroller lockdown — fold it, hold your kid. Rough seas (high wind days) can cause seasickness; bring an antihistamine if your kid is prone. The crew is used to families and will help board/disembark.
