Isla Holbox itinerary: 3, 5 & 7 day templates

Balanced day-by-day plans that mix the signature tours (whale shark, bioluminescence, 3-islands, Yalahau) with the rest-days a tiny island actually calls for. Pick the length that matches your trip, swap days around to match your flight and the moon calendar.

3 nights · the quick immersion

For add-on trips (Cancún + Holbox). Hits the biggest signature + the island vibe without overpacking.

  1. 1

    Day 1 — Arrival + Playa Norte

    wb_sunnyMorning

Cross the ferry (aim for a boat before 15:00). Golf-cart taxi from the dock to your hotel. Drop bags, change.

    restaurantAfternoon

Walk to Playa Norte, swim, grab a late lunch at a beach club with chairs for rent (MXN 400-600/person minimum consumption).

    bedtimeEvening

Walk Calle Igualdad for mural art, sunset at Punta Cocos (~25 min walk) or a west-facing beach club. Dinner in town.

Tip: If you arrive late (after 18:00) skip the sunset walk — eat early, book a 6 AM whale shark or 3-islands tour for the next morning.

  2. 2

Day 2 — Signature tour day

    wb_sunnyMorning

6:00-6:30 AM: pickup for whale sharks (May 15 – Sep 15) OR 3-islands tour (year-round). Both are full-day boat trips with lunch included.

    restaurantAfternoon

Back by 13:00-14:00. Rest, pool / beach, light lunch.

    bedtimeEvening

Bioluminescence kayak if the moon is low (check /bioluminescence for tonight's rating). Otherwise a quiet beachfront dinner.

Tip: DON'T stack both whale shark + biolum on the same day — the whale shark tour wipes you out. Alternate adventure + rest.

  3. 3

    Day 3 — Island exploration + depart

    wb_sunnyMorning

Golf-cart or bike rental (MXN 350-600/day). Ride east to Punta Mosquito sandbar (closed May-Oct for turtle nesting — verify). Pack water + reef-safe sunscreen.

    restaurantAfternoon

Lunch back in town. Beach swim or souvenir shopping.

    bedtimeEvening

Catch the 18:00 or 19:00 ferry if your Cancún flight is next day; stay overnight in Cancún or Chiquilá for an early-morning flight.

Tip: If your flight is before 10 AM, DO NOT depend on the first morning Holbox ferry. Cross back the day before.

FAQ

How many days should I spend on Holbox?
3 nights minimum to make the ferry + travel time worth it. 5 nights is the sweet spot — one signature tour, one half-day tour, two rest days, time for the island to slow you down. 7+ nights only if you want to work remotely from the beach or really decompress; after a week the "what to do today" list gets short.
Can I do Holbox as a day trip from Cancún?
Technically yes, practically no. 4 hours out + 4 hours back + 2x ferry = 10 hours of travel for 4 hours on the island. See /day-trip for the honest breakdown.
What's the one must-do activity?
Depends on season. May-Sep: swim with whale sharks (bucket-list, if you're not seasick-prone). Oct-Apr: bioluminescence kayak on a dark night OR the 3-islands tour. Any time of year: a sunset at Punta Cocos.
What about days 8+?
Rotate between remote work / reading / long swims. Add trips to local artisan workshops, cooking classes, fishing. Avoid trying to "fill" the day — Holbox rewards slowing down.
Can I rearrange the itinerary?
These are templates, not scripts. Rules of thumb: whale shark tour on day 1 or 2 (if the forecast is good — weather cancels tours), biolum on the darkest-moon night, Yalahau on a calm-wind morning. Avoid planning anything mandatory for your departure day — ferry delays happen.
