Cancún Airport to Holbox: every real transfer option

Four ways to get from CUN to Holbox in 2026. Private transfer is fastest and best with luggage/kids. ADO bus is cheapest. Shared shuttle splits the difference. Rental car only makes sense if you’re touring the Yucatán. Compare below and book directly with the provider — we don’t take bookings or commissions.

Three things nobody tells you

The last ferry is at 21:30

So the real last useful transfer from CUN is around 17:30 pickup. Land after 5 PM and you're almost certainly overnighting in Cancún or Chiquilá before crossing.

ADO buses are limited

Only 3-4 direct Cancún Airport → Chiquilá buses per day. Confirm the schedule for your travel date at ado.com.mx — if they don't align with your flight, private is the move.

Your hotel can arrange it

Most Holbox hotels have a go-to transfer provider and will quote you a rate. Often the same price as booking direct, with a confirmed meet-and-greet at CUN. WhatsApp them your flight details.

Verified transfer providers

Frequently asked questions

How long is Cancún Airport to Holbox?
3.5 to 4.5 hours door-to-door. About 2.5-3 hours of driving to Chiquilá, 30-60 min wait at the port, then the 25-minute ferry.
What is the cheapest way from Cancún to Holbox?
ADO direct bus from Cancún Airport to Chiquilá: ~MXN 450 per person. Add MXN 300 for the ferry and you're at ~USD 45 total. Buses run 3-4 times per day; book in advance via ado.com.mx or at the airport ADO counter.
Is a private transfer worth it?
Yes if you have kids, more than 2 bags, or arrive after 6 PM. USD 110-180 for the whole vehicle (up to 4 pax) means USD 28-45 per person — comparable to ADO for 4 but faster, no transfers, hotel-door pickup, and no risk of missing a connection.
Can I rent a car and drive myself?
Yes. The route is highway 180D (toll) then 180 to Chiquilá — well-maintained, GPS-reliable, 2.5 hours. Leave the car at a paid Chiquilá lot (MXN 100/day). This only makes sense if you plan to explore the Yucatán by car after Holbox, otherwise it's overkill vs a one-way transfer.
What if I land late at night?
If you land after 6 PM, you likely can't make the last ferry (21:30 from Chiquilá, which means ~18:00 pickup at CUN). Either overnight in Cancún and take the first morning ADO/transfer, or arrange a private transfer that drops you at a Chiquilá hotel for an early-morning first ferry.
Is there a shuttle from Cancún Hotel Zone to Holbox?
Private transfer providers pick up from any Hotel Zone address. Add ~30 min to the drive. ADO buses don't run from the Hotel Zone directly — you'd need a taxi (MXN 300-500) to the ADO terminal downtown.
Can I day-trip Cancún → Holbox and back?
Technically yes but it's painful. 4h out + 4h back + ferry both ways leaves you ~4 hours on the island. Not worth it. Stay 2-3 nights minimum to justify the travel time.
What about Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Mérida or Valladolid to Holbox?
Same destination (Chiquilá dock) but shorter drives. Playa del Carmen: 2h. Tulum: 2.5h. Mérida: 3.5h. Valladolid: 1.5h. See our Cancún Airport guide for the full comparison — the driving leg differs but the ferry and arrival process are identical.
