How to get from Cancún Airport to Holbox in 2026
Every real option for getting from Cancún International (CUN) to Isla Holbox — bus, private transfer, shared shuttle, self-drive — plus the Chiquilá ferry, prices, and how to avoid missing the last boat.
The route in one sentence
There is only one way to reach Isla Holbox: go to Puerto Chiquilá on the mainland, then take the 25-minute ferry across the Yalahau Lagoon. From Cancún International (CUN), Chiquilá is a 2.5–3 hour drive north. You can cover that leg by private car, ADO bus, shared shuttle, or your own rental — and each has real trade-offs.

- 2.5 – 3 hours
- Ferry crossing
- 25 minutes
- Ferry one-way
- MXN 300 (~USD 18)

Option 1 — Private transfer
Best for: families, groups of 3–6, evening arrivals, or anyone who wants to skip the mental load. A private driver meets you at CUN arrivals with a sign, loads your bags, and drives you straight to Chiquilá — no bus terminals, no waits.
- Typical price: USD 180–250 per vehicle (up to 6 passengers). Split among a family this is often the best value.
- Vehicle: usually a modern Suburban, Traverse, or Tahoe with A/C and space for large luggage.
- Book: in advance through your hotel, a licensed transfer company, or the concierge at PlayaHolbox’s AI concierge.
Watch out for
Option 2 — ADO bus
Best for: solo travelers, budget-first trips, or anyone comfortable with Latin American bus travel. ADO is Mexico’s premium bus line — clean, air-conditioned, assigned seats.
- Price: MXN 400–500 one-way (~USD 24–30).
- Duration: Airport → Cancún ADO terminal (30 min), then direct bus Cancún → Chiquilá (~3.5 hours), so roughly 4 hours plus a wait between buses.
- Schedule: The Cancún → Chiquilá bus runs twice a day — the exact departure times shift seasonally. Check ADO.com.mx before you fly.
- Timing risk: If your flight lands late morning or early afternoon, you can usually catch the same-day bus. Evening arrivals miss it and require an overnight in Cancún.
Option 3 — Shared shuttle
Best for: couples and pairs who want private-transfer comfort at one-third the price. A shared van picks up 6–10 passengers from CUN and drives directly to Chiquilá.
- Price: USD 45–70 per person one-way.
- Duration: Similar to a private transfer plus 20–30 minutes for other pickups. Around 3–3.5 hours to Chiquilá.
- Trade-off: Schedule is set by the operator (usually 2–3 departures/day), so your flight has to line up.
Option 4 — Rental car + Chiquilá parking
Best for: longer Yucatán road trips (Chichén Itzá, Valladolid, Río Lagartos) where Holbox is one stop. If your trip is just Holbox, skip this — cars can’t come on the ferry, and you pay for parking daily.
- Rental: USD 35–70/day from CUN. Insurance is where car rentals get expensive — pre-buy through your credit card or a third party.
- Chiquilá parking: MXN 100–150/day (~USD 6–9) at guarded lots at the port. Multiple vendors compete, prices are posted.
- Fuel + tolls: Roughly MXN 500 round trip if you take the toll road.
The Chiquilá → Holbox ferry
Two licensed operators run the crossing: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos. They alternate roughly every 30 minutes, giving you a departure options every ~15 minutes at peak.

If you miss the last ferry
Chiquilá is a tiny fishing village but it has practical options:
- Sleep in Chiquilá. Several small guesthouses ~5 minutes from the port run around USD 40–60/night. Book on arrival; walk-in is fine.
- Private boat charter. Fishermen occasionally cross late-night for USD 80–120 for the boat. Weather and safety dependent — the operators shut down for a reason.
- Return to Cancún. If you flew into a same-day hotel, private transfer drivers will return you. Costly (~USD 150) but avoids improvising.
