Honest Holbox golf cart rental price comparison — 2026 rates by shop (MXN 1,000–1,500 per 24 h), electric vs gas, deposit required, "stuck in water" fine warning, and where you can + cannot drive on the island.

The short answer

Golf cart rental on Isla Holbox is MXN 1,000–1,500 for 24 hours (~USD 55–85) across the three main rental shops. Hourly rentals around MXN 200 (~USD 11) if you just need to get to Punta Cocos for sunset. Gas is included in the rate.

Deposit is MXN 2,000–5,000 held on your credit card (returned on cart return). You need a valid driver’s license from any country and must be 18+.

You don’t need a golf cart every day. The town is 15 minutes to walk end-to-end and bike rental is MXN 150–250/day. Rent a golf cart only on days you’re going to Punta Cocos, Punta Mosquito, or the far east beaches.

Electric vs gas carts

Honest trade-off:

Electric

Pro
Clean, quiet, no gas-station stops
Pro
Cheaper to recharge if you stay 2+ days
Con
Weaker torque for soft sand (Punta Cocos trail)
Con
Battery range limits all-day far-east exploration

Gas

Pro
Strong on sand + hills
Pro
No range anxiety
Con
Loud
Con
Gas station is on the mainland — bring enough

Pick electric if: you’re staying in town + Zona Hotelera and only driving short loops.

Pick gas if: you’re going to Punta Cocos or east beach trails where the sand gets soft.

Deposit + what you need to rent

  • Driver’s license from any country (valid, physical card — phone photos don’t count)
  • Credit card for the deposit (MXN 2,000–5,000). Debit cards are often not accepted. Cash deposits available at La Conchita only.
  • Passport or ID to verify the name on the license
  • Driver 18+, no exceptions
  • Signed rental contract (in Spanish — ask for the English summary before signing)
warning

Get the damage inspection in writing

Walk around the cart with the attendant before leaving. Photograph every scratch and dent (there will be plenty) and send yourself the photos with the time-stamp. Protects you from being charged for pre-existing damage on return.

Where you can + CANNOT drive

  • Can: all paved + sand streets in town, main beach-adjacent track along Playa Norte, Punta Cocos sand road (gas cart recommended), Yalahau mainland road
  • Cannot: the Punta Mosquito sandbar itself (foot only, protected area), east-beach turtle-nesting zones May–Oct, anywhere ranger-signed as off-limits
  • Should not: flooded streets after rain, deep sand past the main beach track, any route where locals are telling you not to go

The island speed limit is 20 km/h. Actually enforced — don’t rip around.

The "stuck in water" fine

This is where rentals go sideways. If you drive into deep sand, water, or mud and the cart gets stuck, you pay:

  • Recovery fee (winch truck): MXN 1,500–3,000
  • Any damage from being towed out
  • Lost rental days during repair

No rental insurance covers "stuck in water." Common fail scenarios:

  1. Driving down a Pueblo back street after afternoon rain — what looked like a puddle is 2 feet deep
  2. Driving onto the Punta Mosquito sandbar (explicitly prohibited)
  3. Taking an electric cart on the soft sand trail to Punta Cocos — battery dies, cart sinks

Rule of thumb: if you can’t walk across the water in flip-flops without feet-first commitment, don’t drive the cart through it.

Alternatives: bike, walk, taxi

Alternative transport comparison

Walking
Free. 15 min end-to-end town.
Bike rental
MXN 150–250/day. Beach track + town.

High season (whale shark May–Sep + Dec–early Jan):Yes, book 24–48 h ahead via WhatsApp. Shops run out of carts most days. See our verified transport operators directory for current WhatsApp numbers.

For a 1-day island exploration — absolutely. For a 4-day beach vacation where you’re mostly at your hotel — skip it. The town itself is walkable in 15 minutes end-to-end. Rent only on days you plan to go to Punta Cocos sunset, Punta Mosquito, or the far east beaches.

Yes. Any country’s valid driver’s license is accepted. You’ll need to show it + a credit card for the deposit. The driver must be 18+.

How many people can fit in a Holbox golf cart?expand_more

Legal max 4 passengers including the driver. Operators will not rent to parties of 5+ in a single cart — you’d need two.

Is gas or electric better for Isla Holbox?expand_more

MXN 2,000–5,000 (~USD 115–290) held on your credit card. Returned on cart return (no damage, same gas level). Some operators accept cash deposits — verify in writing before handing over.

What happens if my golf cart gets stuck?expand_more
