Best beaches on Isla Holbox
The island only has three beaches worth planning around — and most travelers spend 90% of their beach time on Playa Norte, the 2-km shallow turquoise stretch in town. The other two are destinations: Punta Cocos for sunset + bioluminescence, Punta Mosquito for the famous sandbar (Nov–Apr only).
The main beach
Playa Norte
The 2-km north-facing beach that runs the length of Holbox town. Shallow, calm, warm turquoise water with white sand. Walk 100 metres out and you're still at knee height. This is the beach every photo you've seen of Holbox was taken on.

Bioluminescence point
Punta Cocos
The south-west tip of the island, 25-min walk or 10-min golf-cart ride from town. Mangroves, flamingos (seasonal), empty beach, and the best bioluminescence viewing in Mexico on dark-moon nights. Fewer facilities, more nature.

The sandbar
Punta Mosquito
The famous 2-km sandbar jutting east into the sea at low tide. Walk-into-the-water-up-to-your-knees-for-500m vibe. Pelican colony. Closed to the public during turtle nesting (May-October) — biosphere rules enforced by rangers.
