Wi-Fi & mobile data on Isla Holbox

The honest version. Holbox has decent coverage — but it’s not uniform, and a few things are specific to a small island on fibre + one cell tower. Here’s what actually works, what breaks, and where to go when it does.

If you’re deciding whether to work remotely from Holbox for weeks or months, see the longer digital nomad guide.

The three things to actually know

Carrier: Telcel

Telcel is the only carrier with a tower on the island. Get an eSIM or SIM on the Telcel network — AT&T MX works but is weaker, Movistar is bad.

Speeds: 10–40 Mbps real

4G Telcel + fibre-wired boutique hotels reach 30-60 Mbps. Cheaper hotels / cabañas share one line across all rooms. Video calls are plausible, not guaranteed.

Outages are a thing

Rain throttles LTE; power outages 1-2x/month take down the island including the cell tower (90-min battery backup). Keep a hotspot, battery pack and offline work.

FAQ

What are typical Wi-Fi speeds on Holbox?
Hotels: 5-20 Mbps down is the honest range in late 2026. The newer boutique places near Playa Norte that advertise fiber reach 40-60 Mbps. Café Wi-Fi is similar. Cell data via Telcel on 4G is often the fastest option — 15-50 Mbps when the tower isn't congested.
Which mobile carrier works best on Holbox?
Telcel. It's the only one with a tower on the island itself (near the airport strip), so coverage is reliable in town and on the beach. AT&T Mexico works but drops to 3G in some corners. Movistar is weak. For a traveler SIM/eSIM, pick a plan on the Telcel network.
eSIM vs physical SIM — which should I get?
eSIM is simpler if your phone supports it (iPhone XS+, most 2020+ Androids). Airalo, Holafly and Yesim all have Mexico plans on the Telcel network — activate before you fly, you're online when you land. Physical SIM: buy at the Cancún Airport Telcel counter (passport + MXN 150-250 for a SIM + MXN 300-600 for 15 GB) or at a Telcel kiosk on Holbox.
Can I rely on hotel Wi-Fi for work calls?
Depends on the hotel. Smaller cabañas and palapa-style places frequently share one 20 Mbps line across 20 rooms — fine for email, awful for video. Boutique hotels advertising "high-speed Wi-Fi" or "fiber" usually deliver. ALWAYS confirm by WhatsApp before you book: "¿Cuántos Mbps de bajada y subida tiene el Wi-Fi en las habitaciones?" If they can't answer, treat it as untrusted and plan on hotspot via Telcel.
What happens to Wi-Fi during a storm or outage?
Rain reduces LTE throughput and sometimes drops the island fiber for 10-30 min. Full power outages (brief brownouts are common; 1-4h outages happen 1-2x/month in high season) take down both Wi-Fi and the cell tower (its batteries last ~90 min). Have an offline-work plan for calls, or schedule meetings for mornings when the grid is most stable.
Where should I go if I need to be online for the next 2 hours?
A beach-club restaurant with its own generator (most of the mid-range ones), a boutique hotel lobby that lets guests work, or Café Luuma / Barba Negra / Painapol (cafés with reliable fiber and quiet corners as of 2026). Bring a battery pack — power outlets are limited.
Is there a coworking space on Holbox?
No dedicated coworking as of late 2026. A few hotels offer day-rate workspaces (search our directory for ones that mention "coworking" in their description). Most remote workers rotate between their hotel desk, a café in the morning, and a beach-club table in the afternoon.
