What to ask when you call or WhatsApp an operator

Licensing

For whale shark and biolum tours, ask for the operator's Yum Balam permit number. All licensed operators follow the same federal rules: 2 swimmers per shark, 3-meter minimum distance, snorkel only (no scuba), reef-safe sunscreen only.

What's included

Reputable operators quote a per-person price that includes permit fees, breakfast, lunch, drinks, snorkel gear, and life jackets. If it's cheap-looking, ask what's excluded — park fees and gear rental added later double the real cost.

Cancellation

Bad weather cancels tours regularly. Standard practice on Holbox is a next-day rebook, not a refund — ask what happens if you're on the last day of your trip. Get the cancellation policy in writing (WhatsApp screenshot is fine).

Group size

Shared trips run 6–8 pax per boat. If you want a private boat, ask for a 'tour privado' quote. Private whale shark charters typically run MXN 25,000–40,000 for the boat (up to 6 pax); biolum kayak privates run MXN 2,000–3,000 per person.
