License + insurance
- Driver’s license required. Any country. They photocopy it.
- Minimum age: 21 at most rental shops (some 18 with extra deposit).
- Deposit: MXN 2,000-3,000 cash or credit card hold. Returned undamaged.
- Insurance: not standard. If you damage the cart, you pay parts + labor. Ask about optional damage waiver — usually MXN 100-200/day.
- Take photos of the cart on pickup — every scratch, every dent — with the rental agent present.
Where to rent
Rental shops cluster near the pier and around Parque Central. On the pier, several operators compete for arriving traffic — prices are similar. In town, family-run shops near the plaza often give better rates for multi-day rentals.

Gas vs electric
- Gas carts: Louder, faster (still slow), always-available. Standard on Holbox.
- Electric carts: Quieter, no fuel worry, but require charging. Only a few rental shops offer them and range is limited to a full-day loop. Rare.
For the vast majority of travelers, a gas cart is what you’ll get.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a driver’s license to rent a golf cart in Holbox?expand_more
Yes — you show a valid driver’s license from any country. Rental agencies photocopy it. Age minimum is 21 at most places.
Can you drive a golf cart on Holbox at night?expand_more
Yes, but slowly and with headlights. The town has few streetlights, sand streets can hide potholes, and pedestrians walk in the middle of the street. Speed limit is effectively 20 km/h everywhere.
Where do you park a golf cart at your hotel?expand_more
Most hotels have a small lot or a designated street spot. In the town center around Parque Central, parking is street-side and usually free.
Is a taxi cheaper than renting a cart?expand_more
For short trips (town to Playa Norte, ~50 pesos) yes. For a full day of sightseeing, renting a cart is cheaper. Between: bike rental at MXN 150/day is often the best value if you’re fit.
