Camping on Isla Holbox

Short version: there’s no commercial campground, and camping on the island’s wild east-coast beaches isn’t permitted (biosphere reserve, nesting turtles). If you’re a dedicated camper, Holbox isn’t your island. If you’re budget-constrained, the hostels and basic guesthouses below are the realistic path — many have dorm beds for MXN 400–700/night in high season.

Why there’s no camping

Isla Holbox sits inside the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, a federal protected area. Development is restricted to the existing town footprint; the undeveloped beaches east of town (toward Punta Mosquito) are nesting grounds for sea turtles and roosting habitat for pelicans. Rangers patrol, and biosphere rules prohibit overnight camping on those beaches.

In town, every square metre of Playa Norte is spoken for by a hotel, beach club, or private residence — there’s simply no beach to pitch a tent on.

Your realistic options are a hostel dorm, a basic cabaña or guesthouse, or (if you need the camping-adjacent experience) one of the few “eco-lodge” tent-cabana setups on the island — which are more glamping-priced than camping-priced.

FAQ

Is there a campground on Holbox?
No official commercial campground. The island is part of the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, which restricts development on most of the undeveloped coast — including informal camping on protected beaches east of town. A few hostels allow tent setup in their garden for a small fee (ask before you arrive); otherwise, plan on a hostel bed or basic cabaña.
Can I camp on the beach?
The main beach (Playa Norte) in town is lined with hotels and beach clubs, so there's no space. The remote beaches east of town are inside the biosphere reserve and camping there is not permitted (nesting-turtle protection + fragile dunes). You can picnic and spend the day; sleeping is prohibited.
What's the cheapest way to sleep on Holbox?
A hostel dorm bed in high season runs MXN 400-700/night. A private double in a basic guesthouse: MXN 800-1,200. If you're budget-locked, cross back to Chiquilá and camp/stay cheap on the mainland, then day-trip the island — you'll get full beach access without the Holbox-pricing premium.
What about glamping or eco-tents?
A handful of hotels on Holbox position themselves as "eco-lodges" with tent cabañas or safari-tent accommodation (MXN 2,000-6,000/night, so still hotel pricing). Not budget camping — more of a premium experience. See the directory below.
Can I just show up with a tent and figure it out?
Risky and not recommended. Beach camping is enforced-against by biosphere rangers, hostels may be full in high season, and there's no backup public land. Book a bed before you cross the ferry.
